China to build offshore wind farm project off Jiangsu coast xinde marine news 2019-05-22 15:05

China is going to invest 160 billion yuan ($23.17 billion) to build an offshore wind farm project in the coastal areas of Jiangsu province, with a planned installed capacity of over 10 GW, local media reported.

Research, development, construction and maintenance of wind farms will be integrated in the wind power industrial base.

Jointly developed by state-owned China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd. and Jiangsu province, the new wind-power project will help meet Jiangsu's growing demand for electricity.

The province's power consumption stood at 612.8 TWh in 2018, and is expected to reach 900 TWh in 2030. Its power demand would likely exceed 1,000 TWh by 2035.

Besides, to build a clean, low-carbon emission, green and efficient modern energy system, Jiangsu needs to utilize its geographical advantages as a coastal city with a coastline of 954 kilometers, suitable for offshore wind power development.

Wind has become China's third largest power source after coal and hydro. Data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed the country generated 34.3 TWh of wind power in April, ranking third after 388.6 TWh of thermal power and 82.9 TWh of hydropower.
