China's apparent consumption of natural gas increased 18.1% from the preceding year to 28.7 billion cubic meters (bcm) in January, said the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) on February 28. 

 

The country's natural gas output reached 15.3 bcm in January, increasing 9.7% from a year ago; while its import gas volume climbed up by 29.3% from the previous year to 13.7 bcm in the same month, data showed. 

 

Therefore, it could be calculated that the reliance ratio of China on gas imports inched up 1.8 percentage points from a month earlier to 47.7% in January. 

 

Industry insiders pointed out that the ballooning growth of gas imports was mainly ascribed to the burgeoning domestic demand amid "coal-to-gas" conversion and China has replaced Japan as the biggest gas importer in the world last year. 

 

Last year, China imported a total 158.5 bcm of natural gas. This year, it is estimated that the country would import more gas to meet the increasing domestic demand as this largest energy-consuming nation is promoting cleaner energy usage while ditching traditional coal-burning methods for better environmental quality.
