RINA launches Guide for the carriage of AFV's

RINA launches  Guide for the carriage of AFV's aiming at assisting owners, shipyards and designers in the risk analysis process for the safe carriage of alternative fuelled vehicles on board roro ships.
 
Alternative powered vehicles, or AFV's, are envisioned as the ideal way to curb GHG emissions.
 
However, their carriage on ro-ro ships, both as new and second-hand vehicles and as means of transport, still presents various hazards.
 
It is therefore essential to assess in advance any risks that may affect the people on board, the environment and the safety of the ship itself.
 
The new RINA "Guide for the carriage of AFV's" aims at assisting owners, shipyards and designers in the risk analysis process for the safe carriage of alternative fuelled vehicles on board roro ships, and in particular:  
 
- ro-ro passenger ships certified to carry either "up to" or "more than" 36 passengers (as defined in SOLAS Reg.II-2/3.42) 
- ro-ro cargo ships or vehicle carriers, including pure car carriers and pure car truck carriers (as defined in SOLAS Reg.II-2/3.56)
 
The Guide also covers the carriage of AFV's together with traditionally fuelled vehicles (i.e. hydrocarbon fuels and biofuels).
