CIMC Enric Announces Commissioning of China’s First Large-Scale Bio-Based Green Methanol Project

(16 December 2025 – Hong Kong) CIMC Enric Holdings Limited together with its subsidiaries (“CIMC Enric” or the “Group”) is pleased to announce that China’s first large-scale bio-based green methanol project, developed by the Group, was officially commissioned in Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province on December 16. The commissioning ceremony was attended by a distinguished lineup of guests, including Mr. Gao Xiang, President of CIMC Group and Chairman of CIMC Enric; Mr. Li Yinhui and Mr. Wang Xiaoyan, Vice Presidents of CIMC Group; Mr. Yang Xiaohu, Executive Director and President of CIMC Enric; Mr. Yu Gang, Secretary of the CPC Zhanjiang Municipal Committee; MissAmy Chan, Deputy Secretary for Transport and Logistics, Hong Kong SAR; Mr. He Fugang, General Manager of SDIC Bio-Energy; as well as global partners and industry experts, all gathering to witness this landmark moment for China’s clean energy sector.

Delivering a Decarbonization Pathway for Global Shipping and Reshaping the Clean Energy Value Chain

Situated in Zhanjiang, Guangdong, this project stands among China’s pioneering initiatives to build a fully closed-loop industrial chain spanning “biomass residues → green methanol → marine fuel”. Its commissioning marks a pivotal leap in CIMC Enric’s strategic expansion—extending the Group’s footprint from hydrogen energy into advanced clean liquid fuels, while offering a pragmatic, deep-decarbonization solution tailored to the global maritime industry.

With an initial annual production capacity of 50,000 tonnes, the project holds the distinction of being China’s first large-scale bio-based green methanol facility. Boasting robust feedstock adaptability, high operational flexibility, highly integrated process coupling, and substantial carbon reduction benefits throughout the entire lifecycle, it achieves an impressive over 83% reduction in lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The full value chain—from feedstock sourcing and production to downstream storage and trading—has obtained certification under the ISCC EU certification scheme. Additionally, the end product has undergone C-14 testing by Beta Analytic (USA), verifying comprehensive carbon traceability from feedstock to final product.

Global shipping accounts for approximately 3% of the world’s total carbon emissions, and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) requires the sector to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The Zhanjiang green methanol plant is strategically aligned with the IMO 2050 Net-Zero Target, the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), and the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED), directly addressing the pressing decarbonization needs of the global maritime sector.

Unlocking the Green Potential of Agroforestry Residues: A Strategic Hub Linking South China, Southeast Asia and Europe
Nestled at the southernmost tip of mainland China, Zhanjiang enjoys a warm and humid climate, coupled with abundant agroforestry residue resources. Leveraging local feedstock advantages, the project has achieved breakthroughs in biomass gasification through proprietary technological innovations, completing the full value chain for high-value utilization of agroforestry residues. This not only supports rural revitalization efforts but also advances regional progress toward the “Dual Carbon” goals.

Endowed with the strategic advantage of Zhanjiang Port and ample biomass feedstock supplies, the project is primed to supply green methanol to key markets including the Greater Bay Area and Singapore, as well as other major international ports. It represents a critical step forward in scaling up China’s green methanol industry.

CIMC Enric offers a comprehensive portfolio of advanced key equipment, core processes, and integrated services for the clean energy sector, adopting a proprietary “equipment + technology + operation" approach with full independent control over core equipment. CIMC ENRIC Engineering Technology Co., Ltd. delivers high-quality, fast-track turnkey construction services for the project.

Drawing on these strengths, the initiative has established South China’s first full-chain green methanol ecosystem. Key highlights include 30,000 m³ methanol storage tanks and a dedicated loading berth at Zhanjiang Deepwater Port, enabling a seamless one-hour “production–storage–transport” closed loop. The project has also built a “same-day delivery” bunkering network covering vessels across the Greater Bay Area, positioning itself as China’s closest hub for exporting green methanol to international ports such as Hong Kong and Singapore. This localized supply chain significantly cuts methanol transportation emissions, realizing a truly end-to-end green value chain.

Partnering with Global Leaders to Launch a New Era of Green Shipping
Senior representatives from leading global green fuel and maritime enterprises graced the commissioning ceremony. The distinguished attendees included major international shipowners such as Maersk and CMA CGM; BASF (Germany), a strategic partner in green chemicals; and China Marine Bunker (PetroChina) Co., Ltd. and Sinopec Fuel Oil Sales Co., Ltd., the world’s top marine fuel trading and bunkering companies.

Mr. Gao Xiang delivered keynote speeches, extending a warm welcome to government officials, partners, and industry representatives. He emphasized that the commissioning of the Zhanjiang bio-based green methanol plant is not only a major milestone for CIMC Enric but also signals the emergence of South China as a new global hub for green shipping and clean fuel innovation. The Group is poised to play an active and pivotal role in driving the irreversible transition toward maritime decarbonization.

He further underscored CIMC Enric’s commitment to supplying bio-based green methanol that meets the highest international standards to Southeast Asia, Europe, and global maritime markets. The Group aims to take a leading role in reshaping the clean fuel ecosystem, collaborating with upstream and downstream supply chain partners to explore optimal pathways for industry transformation.

Additional speeches were delivered by Mr. Qin Ling, General Manager and Party Secretary of China Shipping & Sinopec Suppliers Co., Ltd., and Mr. Carlos Padilla, Global Methanol Strategy Lead at Bunker Holding. Argus, a leading global maritime fuel media outlet, presented a keynote address titled “Emerging Demand for Bio-Based Green Methanol Marine Fuel: A New Decarbonization Journey for Shipping”.

It is anticipated that, under the joint witness of the industry, this project will inject strong impetus into the development of green fuels both in China and around the world and help steer the global shipping industry toward a green, zero-carbon, and sustainable future.
