METIS Cyberspace Technology SA - Looking forward to serving the advancing needs of maritime sector with continuing innovation

With the continuous development of the shipping industry, high-tech accidents or problems such as cyber attacks, low operation efficiency are not uncommon to those shipping companies without changing now. How to avoid and cope with such issues are undoubtedly of importance. Xinde Marine News has an interview to Mike Konstantinidis, Co-Founder & CEO at METIS Cyberspace Technology SA, during which he talks about new technologies which can support shipowners in meeting compliance legislation, digitalization of shipping and how to achieve decarbonization objectives, etc.

Xinde Marine News: Could you make a brief introduction to METIS CYBERSPACE TECHNOLOGY?

Mike Konstantinidis:Founded in 2016, METIS has established itself as a leading data analytics company for the maritime sector.  Our award-winning IoT platform offers data acquisition, real time performance monitoring and intelligent analytics, utilizing AI and machine learning – with a service backed up by a skilled team of engineers, analysts and shipping business professionals. We now have sensors installed on 275 vessels, collecting 350 billion measurements per month.

Xinde Marine News:  How do you see digitalization evolving in the Shipping industry now? What new technologies can support shipowners in meeting compliance legislation?

Mike Konstantinidis:Whilst the shipping sector has lagged behind other industries, the transition towards digitalization has speeded up considerably recently, as shipowners have become more open to the role IoT-based connectivity can play in enhancing ship efficiency and crew welfare. Significant progress has been made in the development of solutions that assess, monitor and predict vessel performance – and data analytics is changing everything from engine maintenance, vessel maneuvering, voyage planning and charterparty reporting. In addition, intelligent fuel monitoring and emissions measuring technologies have become critical in supporting shipping's regulatory compliance and decarbonization goals.

Xinde Marine News: What specified solutions do you provide to help shipowners and ship managers achieve their decarbonization objectives?

Mike Konstantinidis:In the past year, METIS has developed a number of ‘industry firsts', such as its AER predictive INDEX to support financing decisions under the Poseidon Principles and efforts to adopt IMO’s CII (Carbon Intensity Indicator). Most recently, METIS launched an Electrical Power Profile app which takes stock of a vessel’s electrical loading to optimize energy use to support low emissions operations.  In addition, at the beginning of this year we launched a Charter Party Agreement module to tackle the challenges shipping companies face in reporting requirements, with efficient fuel use forming a key performance indicator.

Xinde Marine News: what kinds of clients choose the METIS IoT platform to help them with their digital transformation?

Mike Konstantinidis:We have been selected by companies operating all kinds of vessels, from PCTC's to container ships, and from tankers and bulk carriers to offshore support vessels. The METIS suite of solutions is continuously evolving, as we collaborate closely with clients to help them meet specific requirements for their operations.  For example, this year a well-known Asian gas carrier operator requested an AI-driven cargo handling and energy efficiency option for its fleet and we were able to develop unique functionality to meet their needs.  It's also worth emphasizing that, in contrast to some solutions, evolving requirements for emissions monitoring are best served by an end-to-end IoT platform such as ours which supports global EEXI and CII legislation.

Xinde Marine News: Do you have some advice to shipping stakeholders? Or do you want to say anything else?

Mike Konstantinidis:The positive feedback that we've had from shipping companies – most of which have installed our technology fleetwide - has been overwhelming.  Testimonials range from praise for the increase in daily efficiency and the enhancement of safety and reliability, through to success in meeting objectives to minimize environmental impact. We feel that there is direct linkage between this type of feedback and the rapid growth METIS has achieved: already, we have offices and representatives worldwide – and we look forward to serving the advancing needs of the maritime sector with next continuing innovation.
