Satcom is key to Maritime Digitalization

Satcom is the key aspect of smart shipping and the digital transformation in the maritime sector, said Ken Loke, Vice-President, Asia-Pacific, for KVH Industries, in 2019 International Ship Management and Technology Forum (ISMTF) on 4th Dec.

And looking in the future, it is important for shipping companies to ensure that fast data speeds, uninterrupted connectivity, big data in satellite communication, Multimedia content and keep cyber security.

The fact that everything is included is the reason for ship owners to choose a satcom provider: connectivity, content, hardware, installation, and maintenance. Also key deciding points were the fact that there is no commitment, and no risk of investment for the vessel owner, according to Mr. Loke.

KVH antennas are 85% smaller in volume and lighter than standard 1-meter VSAT and C-band Antennas; KVH delivers Free Standard Installation with an extensive list of selected ports and locations around the globe; Zero maintenance costs for life of subscription; KVH OneCare™ Global Technical Assistance Package.

Further, KVH can offer a unique dual channel configuration, so you can have a constant flow of IoT data being monitored and transferred, and you can also stream for security cameras or remote video chats to troubleshoot an immediate issue.

Already, mini-VSAT Broadband is the most popular maritime VSAT solution and the choice of the leading commercial operators. What we’re offering now is going to transform the industry and how you think about satcom at sea.

Mr. Loke provided three key points that operators should consider when it is about maritime connectivity:
-   Understanding why thousands of ships are migrating from L-band systems to VSAT systems
-   Examining the reasons why seafarers are expecting crew welfare and content to be delivered digitally
-   Understanding the importance of Internet of Things connectivity for remote monitoring and vessel performance
