The Port of Hong Kong has reclaimed its place as the fifth busiest container port in the world at the end of 2017. In 2016, the port had slipped to 6th position behind Busan Port when the South Korean facility recorded throughput of 19.85m teu compared with 19.81m teu achieved by Hong Kong.
Container throughput at the Port of Hong Kong ended the year disappointingly with a fall of 10.6% compared with December 2016. But the throughput for 2017 as a whole rose 4.8% compared with the previous year creating a grand total of 20.775m teu. On December 26, Busan Port declared its annual total for 2017 as 20m teu.
In December 2017, the Kwai Tsing Container Terminals handled 1.35m teu, down 3.6% on the December 2016 figure of 1.40m teu the previous year. The number of containers handled by mid-stream operators collapsed in December by 27.7% to just 420,000 teu compared to 581,000 teu in December 2016.
The Port of Singapore retained its number two spot in 2017 with annual throughput of 33.7m teu, benefiting from an 8.9% increase in box volumes. In 2014, the Port of Singapore handled 33.9m teu, a figure it has failed to equal in the following three years.
The Port of Shanghai increased its dominance as the world’s busiest port with annual throughput in 2017 reaching 40m teu.
