China's coal imports from Australia's Gladstone port increased 15% on the year and surged 77% from November to 1.58 million tonnes in December, hitting a new high, showed data from Gladstone Ports Corporation.
Coal exports through Gladstone port stood at 6.31 million tonnes in the same month, decreasing 11.3% year on year and up 16.9% month on month.
Japan took delivery of 2.22 million tonnes of coal from Gladstone in December, down 2% year on year but rising 37% month on month, data showed.
India followed with imports of 1.3 million tonnes in the same month, declining 31% on the year but increasing 20% from the preceding month.
Total coal exports through Gladstone port were 68.29 million tonnes in 2017, edging down 2% year on year, hitting the new low since 2013's 62.74 million tonnes.
