Central China's Hubei province found new shale gas fields in its western part with combined geological resources reaching 11.68 trillion cubic meters, China Geological Survey said in a meeting on January 22.
The resources provide possibility of producing 10 billion cubic meters of shale gas per year in the region.
The western Hubei is expected to become one of major shale gas bases besides Fuling in Chongqing municipality and Changning-Weiyuan in Sichuan province in China.
The finding is of great significance in driving China's shale gas development eastward from upstream areas along the Yangtze River.
