Top speakers tackle CO2 and compliance topics at ICS LISW2017 conference
London- The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the principal global trade association for shipowners, organised a one day conference at the magnificent premises of the British Library earlier today. The event was attended by a significant number of stakeholders from all sectors of the shipping spectrum, given the importance of environmental and other thorny topics at this turning point in the shipping industry. The conference, one of the top attractions of London International Shipping Week LISW2017, consisted of panel discussions on the following four issues:
- CO2 reduction,
- New environmental regulation with particular focus on costs of compliance,
- Free trade, and
- Questions associated with the work of seafarers.
Peter Hinchliffe, secretary–general of the ICS, welcomed attendees and introduced the issues to be discussed. Two keynote speakers Kitack Lim, secretary-general of the International Maritime Organization, and Esben Poulsson, chairman of the ICS set the scene.
Gabrielle Walker, of the New Scientist and BBC, moderated the session “CO2 Reduction: Developing the IMO Road Map Panel,” with panellists: Sveinung Oftedal of the Norwegian Ministry of Climate & Environment; John Adams, ICS vice chairman; managing director, Teekay Shipping, and chairman, Bahamas Shipowners’ Association; Magda Kopczynska, director maritime transport at DG Move, European Commission; John C Lyras, principal of Paralos Maritime Corporation and ICS board member for the Union of Greek Shipowners; and John Maggs, president, Clean Shipping Coalition.
Ms Walker also moderated the debate “New Environmental Regulation: Costs of Compliance,” with panellists Scott Bergeron, chief executive of the Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry, Pia Berglund, chief executive of the Swedish Shipowners’ Association; Emanuele Grimaldi, managing director, Grimaldi Group, vice-chairman ICS and president, Confederazion Italiana Armatori; Jeffrey Lantz,director of commercial regulations and standards, United States Coast Guard; and Katy Ware, director of maritime safety and standards, UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
Daniel Franklin from The Economist moderated the discussion themed “Maintaining Free Trade: Dusk or New Dawn?” Panellists were Henry Curra, global head of research, Braemar ACM Shipbroking; Jan Hoffmann, head of trade logistics branch at Unctad; Andreas Nordseth, director-general of the Danish Maritime Authority and chairman, Consultative Shipping Group; Svein Steimler, president and chief executive, NYK Group Europe and ICS board member for Japanese Shipowners’ Association; and Frans Waals, editor, DynaLiners (Dynamar BV).
Andrew Linington moderated the final discussion on “Decent Work for Seafarers: Are We Delivering?” with panellists Max Johns, managing director, German Shipowners’ Association; Richard Schiferli, secretary-general, Paris MOU on Port State Control; Jacqueline Smith, maritime coordinator, International Transport Workers’ Federation; and Brandt Wagner, head of transport and maritime unit, sectoral policies department, International Labour Organization.
The event culminated in an exceptional evening reception sponsored by KVH Videotel where attendees could network and discuss further the key topics elaborated during the ICS conference.
