Seafarers Happiness Index (SHI) Quarter 2 2022 results shows a rise in optimism Standard Club 2022-08-22 09:50

Seafarers Happiness Index (SHI) Quarter 2 2022 results are a measure of the happiness level of seafarers amidst the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic and the geopolitics of Russia and Ukraine. Yet this quarter registers a welcome rise in optimism with a significant uptick in the overall rating of 7.21/10, from 5.85 in the previous quarter.

One of the contributing factors to this air of optimism is the fact that crew changes have become more regular. The Neptune Declaration Crew Change Indicator (CCI) July 2022 data indicates that the number of seafarers onboard vessels beyond the expiry of their contract has decreased slightly from 4.3 to 4.2% in the last month while the number of seafarers onboard for over 11 months has remained stable at 0.3%.  The CCI data also registered another positive: a rise in the number of vaccinated seafarers from 86.2% in June to 89.3% in July.

Given an overall stabilization of the pandemic, an easing of general restrictions and lockdowns, seafarers stand a much better chance of getting home unhindered compared to a few months ago. Knowing for certain when is pay-off day and when they can embrace loved ones again makes for a jump in overall levels of happiness. When asked how happy they were generally when at sea, the average score was 7.27/10, a rise from 5.92 in the previous quarter.

Stay tuned to this space as we unpack Q2 results, piece together the seafarer condition and what implications this has for all of us.
