Wanhai orders another 12 feeder ships! xinde marine news Sarah Yu 2021-06-30 11:51

Asian feeder ship "boss" Wan Hai Lines continued to invest heavily in ordering and expanding, adding 12 3055TEU container ships to Japanese shipyards. In the first half of the year, it has spent nearly US$2.6 billion on ordering 37 ships in Japanese and Korean shipyards.

On June 28, Wan Hai announced that in order to improve operational performance and service levels, it has ordered 12 3055TEU container ships from JMU and Nihon Shipyard, each at a cost of 5.07-5.4 billion yen (approximately US$46-49 million). The total transaction amount is 60.84-64.8 billion yen (approximately US$5.49-585 million), and the price includes the amount of ship upgrade equipment.

Industry sources pointed out that the price of Wan Hai's order was low, with industry estimates for a container ship of this size around $51 million due to rising steel costs.

According to Alphaliner's data, Wan Hai's fleet currently operates 147 ships, of which 86 are self-owned ships and 64 are chartered ships, with a total capacity of 612,424 TEU, narrowly defeating ZIM and ranking 10th in the world.

In addition, Wan Hai has 34 new ships under construction, with a total capacity of 224,898 TEU, accounting for 54.5% of the existing fleet, which ranks the highest among the top ten shipping companies in the world.
