South Korea's DaeSun Shipbuilding said Tuesday it has signed a contract with Chinese liner company SITC to build up to 10 1023 TEU container ships worth nearly US $200 million.
SITC said that its subsidiary SITC Shipowner has signed an order with the shipyard for 8+2 1023TEU container ships at a cost of $19.2 million per vessel, with eight confirmed new ships to be delivered in 2023. Payment for each vessel will be made in 5 instalments, 10% per node for each of the first 4 instalments, and 60% balance payment upon delivery of the vessel.
According to DaeSun Shipbuilding, the container ships contracted this time meet the environmental protection requirements of the new IMO regulations.
DaeSun Shipbuilding, a mid-sized South Korean shipyard, was bought late last year by a group of Busan companies including Dongil Steel, South Korea's fourth-largest steelmaker, and declared independent just last month after struggling to operate. Including an order for eight chemicals tankers from European shipowner ACE Tanker in April. DaeSun has 21 orders for new ships worth $660m in the first half.
Headquartered in Hong Kong, SITC currently operates 96 container ships with a total capacity of 1428,75TEU, ranking 16th among global liner companies.
