Many prominent members of Hong Kong’s maritime community turned out in force last Friday (June 28) to witness the christening of a pair of harbour tugs said to be the most powerful operating in the harbour.

The vessels, owned by Hongkong Salvage & Towage,a division of HUD Group, were on display at Pier 9 in Central as an appreciative crowd looked on from the Maritime Museum as they toasted good fortune to the two high-performance tugs. Many of the onlookers were treated to an onboard tour of the cutting-edge vessels.

The Robert Allen Ltd designed RAstar 3200 Class vessels, MAI PO and SUNG KONG were built by Cheoy Lee Shipyards and join four other Robert Allan Ltd designs built by the same shipyard.

The particulars of the RAstar 3200 tugs are:

Length, overall: 32:00m (excluding fenders)

Beam, moulded: 12.80m

Depth, moulded (hull) 5.37m

Maximum draft: 4:19m (above baseline)

The vessels are equipped for off-ship fire-fighting capability to Fi-Fi standard with water spray. They are rated for indirect escort manoeuvres in addition to ship-handling operations.

The tugs exceeded the owner’s requirements at sea trials, achieving speeds in excess of 13 knots and BP in excess of 82 tonnes.
