Shipbuilders from China and Japan are seeking cooperation with each other, hoping to establish more joint ventures.
One new ship-building joint venture, established by China's Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group and Japan's Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding, is about to start operations in east China's Jiangsu Province.
They want to achieve maximum production efficiency together by establishing a joint venture.
"Chinese shipbuilders are low cost and highly efficient. This is the strength of China," said Koji Tamura, executive officer of Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding.
"Despite the fact that Chinese companies have made a huge technical progress, they are still humble," said Henichi Ono, head of Mitsui (Shanghai) Mobility Division.
The cooperation came after China lifted restrictions on foreign investment in the industry just a year ago, including ship construction, repair and design.

"Seeing China's further opening-up, its lift on foreign investment restriction and the restriction on shipbuilding industry, we want to be the first to try this," said Ren Yuanlin, chairman of Yangzhijiang Shipbuilding Group.
In addition to bulk carriers and tankers, the joint venture with Japan also builds small ships for transporting liquefied natural gas or LNG.
It will start operations this August and help both sides share the benefits of the global shipping industry.
