Hong Kong records 16 consecutive months of declining volume xinde marine news 2019-05-17 15:49

The Port of Hong Kong clocked up its 16th consecutive month of declining box volumes in April.

The Kwai Tsing terminals accounted for 1.215m teu, recording a 5.2% drop in box throughput, as midstream volumes increased by 6.5% to 340,000 teu, resulting in a 2.9% drop overall at the Port of Hong Kong.

The cumulative total of containers handled at Hong Kong during the first four months of 2019 is 5.994 m teu, equating to fall of 7.6% on the 2018 Q1 figure of 6.489m teu.

By contrast the Port of Singapore clocked up April box volumes of 2.99m teu, an increase of 2.4%.

Four of Hong Kong’s terminal operators – Modern Terminals, HIT, Cosco-HIT, and Asia Container Terminals – began to implement the Hong Kong Seaport Alliance on April 1, a rear guard action to halt the decline in box volumes at the port, and with an ambition to reclaim 2m teu from rivals by 2020.
