Wärtsilä--EGCS Installation will be a future trend xinde marine news Anita 2019-04-26 18:38

Among selection of low Sulphur oil, LNG and installation of EGCS (Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems), which is the better way to implement IMO 2020 Sulphur Cap?

During our interview with Jan Othman, the Director, Exhaust Treatment at Wärtsilä Corporation, Jan stated that at present there are about 40,000 ocean-going vessels in the world. In terms of quantity, the number of vessels installing EGCS accounts for 7.5%, and 20% from the perspective of tonnage. Most large merchant vessels such as bulkers, tankers, container vessels and large cruise vessels have already installed EGCS, with more and more vessels still yet to install both new build and retrofits t before 2025. Wärtsilä, an industry leader providing scrubber solutions among their extensive portfolio, has gained customers’ trust.

Discussing with Jan the view of a vessel’s installation of EGCS, he expressed that EGCS as means of compliance with the global sulphur cap and for reducing harmful emissions is expected to remain an important technology option.

As HFO will remain cheaper than LSFO, they are confident that a large portion of vessels will choose to install EGCS as their preferred solution. The associated financial commitment may be a concern for some with the initial installation, but the potential fuel cost savings to be gained here can be offset against this cost.
