Chinese vessel returns after first scientific expedition xinde marine news 2019-02-27 16:13

A Chinese deep-sea exploration vessel returned to port on Tuesday after completing the first joint scientific expedition with Pakistan.

Haiyang Dizhi-10 (Ocean Geology No.10) returned to south China's Guangzhou Port after its first-ever deep-sea scientific expedition.

Deng Xiguang, principle researcher with Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey, said, "Our expedition lasted 91 days. And during that period, many Pakistani research institutions and scientists came to visit the vessel. Thanks to the close cooperation between the scientists of both countries, we successfully accomplished the designed task of the voyage."

Cooperation is part of Chinese marine geological researchers’ two-way communication and exchanges with their international counterparts. It has helped improve China’s capabilities in conducting such surveys.

As one of the most advanced ocean geological survey vessels, Haiyang Dizhi-10 saw its equipment performance and survey capabilities thoroughly tested in harsh sea conditions. Since it went into operation in 2017, the vessel has conducted 12 voyages, worked a total of 262 days and sailed 57,000 kilometers. It has conducted comprehensive researches on marine geology, geophysics, physical oceanography, marine life, and offshore drilling, and implemented tasks of surveying geological conditions of some marine regions and assessing their environment.

"We can acquire a thoroughly accurate data about both the upper and lower parts of the ocean bottom, and that can help us secure more discoveries in the researched area," said Sun Yanming, deputy leader of the expedition.
