World's First Methanol Dual-Fuel Retrofit for Large Container Vessels


Shanghai COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry has officially launched the world’s first large container ship retrofitting project to convert both the main and auxiliary engines to methanol dual-fuel technology. This groundbreaking EPCIC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Installation & Commissioning) project marks a significant step towards greener shipping and sustainable development in the maritime industry.

The project involves the conversion of the MAN S90 main engine and the Wärtsilä W32 auxiliary engine from traditional diesel fuel to methanol dual-fuel – a global first. By retrofitting four ships, with an additional nine planned, we are pioneering the transition of large container vessels to green, low-carbon technology.

As high-value and mainstream vessels, methanol dual-fuel container ships are vital to enhancing innovation in China’s shipbuilding industry and boosting international competitiveness. This initiative fills a critical gap in domestic standards for dual-fuel retrofitting and will accelerate research, development, and application of methanol-powered technologies.

Moreover, this project demonstrates the integration of green, low-carbon solutions in shipping, which will play a strategic and foundational role in driving the industry's transformation toward sustainability.
