Indian Register of Shipping classed Indian Navy warships launched

Indian Register of Shipping announced that two new vessels for the Indian Navy, the last of the series of four Survey Vessels (Large) [SV(L)], INS Sanshodak, and the third in the series of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft [ASW-SWC], INS Anjadip, were launched on 13th June 2023. The keel for the seventh ASW-SWC was also laid on the same day.

The contract for both types of vessels had been awarded to Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd., Kolkata, who, in turn, sub-contracted some of the vessels to Larsen & Toubro Shipbuilding, Chennai.

The occasion was one of great pride for the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), an international ship classification society, since both series of vessels are being classed by IRS, in compliance with the IRS Naval Rules.

The primary role of the ASW-SWC is to undertake anti-submarine operations in coastal waters. It also has the capability for undertaking Low-Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO), Mine Laying operations, and Subsurface Surveillance in littoral waters.

The SV(L) will have the capability to carry four Survey Motor Boats and an integral helicopter. Its primary role is to undertake full scale Coastal and Deep-Water Hydrographic Surveys, as well as survey of ports and navigational channels. The SV(L)s will have over 80% indigenous content by cost, which will give a fillip to Indian defence manufacturing units, with a spin off in increasing employment generation and warship building capability in the country.

Cdr KK Dhawan, Head-Defence at IRS, said ‘The launch of the fourth Survey Vessel and third Anti-Submarine Warfare craft reinforces IRS commitment to indigenous shipbuilding in line with the Government’s vision of ‘Make in India’ and self-reliance initiative of Atmanirbhar Bharat’.
