Box throughput at the Port of Hong Kong in April saw its steepest year-on-year decline on record. The Kwai Tsing terminals and mid-stream operators recorded a total throughput for the month of April total 1.255m teu, reflecting a decrease of 22.3% compared to April 2022.
Drilling down into the figures the Kwai Tsing terminals handled 970,000 teu, down 20.5% compared to 1.220m teu a year ago. Meanwhile, midstream operators saw their biggest throughput decline since January 2022. In April the operators handled 285,000 teu, falling off 28% compared to April 2022, spelling the end of the Covid-19 premium gained at the cost of cross border trucking which was paralyzed during the worst of the pandemic.
The accumulated throughput for the first four months of 2023 is 4.674m teu, reflecting a 12.2% drop in box handling compared to the same period in 2022.
