Energy saving and environmental protection will be the main development direction for China's container ship building, said a container ship engineer on Thursday.
Shanghai-based Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co. Ltd. delivered a vessel with a capacity of 24,116 TEUs, or 'twenty-foot equivalent' units, to Mediterranean Shipping Company SA (MSC) on Thursday, breaking the record for the world's largest container ship.
The delivery will further consolidate the leading position of Chinese shipbuilders in the construction of ultra-large container vessels.
Named MSC Tessa, the mega boxship is the first of four 24,116-TEU container vessels ordered by Mediterranean Shipping Company.
Liu Xuedong, deputy general manager of Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co. Ltd., said that China has made breakthroughs in building fuel and natural gas container ships, adding that building the ships in a cleaner way will be the development direction.
"Using all kinds of new-type clean energy including natural gas and methyl alcohol will be the direction in the future. Being able to build the world's largest container ship means China's material engineering and design capabilities, engineering management capabilities, including the operation capabilities of our shipyards have reached a higher level," said Liu.
