Electric vehicle exports in Shanghai have maintained a strong momentum in the first two months of 2023, with nearly 10,000 EVs shipping out at one port in the past week.
In January of this year, two major automobile outbound ports of the city exported some 110,000 vehicles in total.
Shanghai Nangang Port, one of the two ports, promises a new monthly auto export record in February.
"We are indeed very busy everyday these days. Our daily work load is about three to four thousand vehicles," said Gong Liang, a port dispatch manager.
With Chinese EV brands' popularity growing in overseas markets, Shanghai's ports have registered large volumes of vehicle exports since 2022.
To meet fast-growing demand in overseas markets in 2023, major domestic automakers are producing at full capacity, and companies like the SAIC Motor have already registered impressive export volumes.
The Shanghai-based carmaker shipped over 20,000 vehicles overseas during the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday in January, setting a new weekly record.
The company has set its 2023 sales target at 6 million vehicles, including 1.2 million units for overseas. It expects to sell 1.5 million EVs this year.
"Our overall export momentum in Europe is very good, and our sales target for this year is to double that of last year. In Europe, which is our main market, we expect to sell about 300,000 vehicles," said Liu Guoming, SAIC Motor's executive director of international supply chain management department.
