Alphaliner: Boxship sales halved in 2022

According to Alphaliner's latest report released on January 11, container ship sales halved to a total of 295 units of 950,300 TEU in 2022, falling back in line with averages seen over the previous decade.

A total of 295 container ships equivalent to 950,300 TEU were sold in 2022, a decline of 49% by number and 53% by capacity compared to 2021, with a final tally of 2.04 MTEU sold.

The world's largest container line MSC was the most active buyer in 2022, purchased 44% of the 950,300 TEU capacity sold during 2022, totally 92 vessels of 420,000 TEU. MSC paid USD 85 M to buy 8,814 TEU NORTHERN JASPER in October 2022. CMA CGM was the next most active carrier, snapping up 31 ships of 102,500 TEU.

Alphaliner said, due to overcapacity triggered by the monumental orderbook, S&P price prospects are unlikely to improve anytime soon. Non-operating owners and regional carriers are expected to benefit from the situation because of the prohibitive tonnage cost.
