The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA)’s Academy welcomed 16 senior maritime leaders from 12 countries and the International Maritime Organization at the 12th Maritime Public Leaders’ Programme (MPLP). The MPLP is an executive leadership programme that was first launched in 2011. It is a valuable platform for knowledge sharing and discussions among senior maritime leaders from around the world on important maritime issues and development. The 12th MPLP was held in Singapore from 21 November to 25 November 2022.
The MPLP is jointly organised by the MPA Academy and the Nanyang Technological University of Singapore (NTU). The senior maritime leaders attended lectures, panel discussions, case studies, networking sessions and visited key maritime facilities. The activities and visits were supported and facilitated by professors from NTU, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore, and various industry experts.
This year’s programme covered a range of topics, including shipping economics, maritime risk management, maritime digitalisation and innovation, decarbonisation, maritime security, crisis communications, and public leadership and governance.
Since its launch in 2011, more than 200 international maritime leaders from close to 100 countries have participated in the MPLP.
“The return of face-to-face engagements at MPLP allows participants to deepen trust among stakeholders, and discuss collaboration projects to address the common challenges for global shipping, including efforts to accelerate the supply of green fuels to support decarbonisation efforts” said Mr Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive of MPA.
“It is the twelfth time that NTU jointly organises the MPLP with the MPA Academy and it is also the first time for the programme to be face-to-face since Covid - 19. We are expecting more interactions between our participants and speakers. This year, the programme will include a panel discussion on enhancing resiliency in the maritime industry. We invite professionals and experts in different maritime sectors to discuss the challenges and uncertainties faced by the industry and share their insights to improve maritime resilience. We hope the participants will be able to gain useful takeaways through our programme” said Professor Jasmine Lam, Programme Director of MPLP, NTU.
Set up as a full-fledged academy complete with a dedicated training facility, the MPA Academy seeks to provide maritime leadership programmes such as MPLP to equip global maritime professionals with the skills to respond better to transformational shifts and new opportunities in the maritime industry. The academy also organises three other programmes - the Advanced Maritime Leaders' Programme, the Port Management Programme and the Maritime Transformation and Innovation Programme.
