A week-long series of activities is underway to mark China's 18th National Maritime Day which fell on Monday, with the focus on green, low-carbon and smart, and sustainable development of maritime shipping.
Among all, a "China Maritime Forum" as a part of the "China Maritime Week 2022" that gathers governmental officials, industrial leaders and top scholars, opened on Monday in the sea port city of Dalian, northeast China's Liaoning Province.
The sub-venues of the event are distributed across the country both online and offline, including academic conference and maritime science popularization activities.
Also on Monday, primary and secondary school students from Dalian visited a training vessel Yu Kun, China's first self-developed and self-designed training ship that is also the world's most advanced for navigation education.
They learned about sailing devices, seamanship techniques as well as a theme exhibition during the tour trip.
The vessel has been to more than 30 countries and regions since it was commissioned in 2008.
About 95 percent of the international trade volume is done through maritime shipping. By the end of 2021, China's maritime fleet had boasted a transport capacity of 350 million tons, ranking the second in the world.
July 11 was set as China's National Maritime Day in 2005 to mark the 600th anniversary of the ocean voyages of Zheng He, a great Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) navigator who is recognized as the country's pioneer in navigation.
