2022 and 2023 will be the peak year for China's shipbuilding steel demand

In 2021, the total amount of steel used in shipbuilding in China will be about 9.8 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 3.2%. It is expected that in the next five years, the demand for shipbuilding steel in China will maintain a steady growth, and it will exceed 11 million tons in 2022, with a year-on-year growth rate of 12%, and there is limited room for price declines.
In 2021, the international shipping market recovered, the demand for container shipping was strong, and the global new shipbuilding market was active. Chinese shipping enterprises undertook 67.07 million dwt new ships, an increase of 131.8% year-on-year.
 
Among them, orders for various container ships were 27.38 million dwt, accounting for 60.9% of the world's total; Orders for green-powered ships accounted for about 24.4% of China's new ship orders. Driven by the sharp increase in orders for new ships, the demand for shipbuilding steel has rebounded significantly.
 
At the end of December 2021, China's hand-held ship orders were 95.84 million dwt, a year-on-year increase of 34.8%, reaching a new high in the past five years.
 
It is expected that in the next five years, the demand for steel used in China's shipbuilding industry will maintain a steady growth, and it will exceed 11 million tons in 2022, with a year-on-year growth rate of 12%.
 
2022~2023 will be the peak year for shipbuilding steel, and the demand for various types of medium and heavy plates will remain high. Although the prices of raw materials such as iron ore are expected to continue to fall, it is expected that the price of shipbuilding steel will have limited room for decline throughout the year.
