Smarter shipping operations through big data and digital connectivity

By Dr. Shahrin Osman, Regional Head of Maritime Advisory, Director of Maritime Decarbonization and Autonomy Centre of Excellence Asia – Pacific at DNV

Dr. Shahrin Osman will be one of the key panelists at the upcoming Asia Pacific Maritime (APM) 2022 exhibition and conference held from 16 – 18 March 2022 in Singapore. Supported by the Maritime Port Authority and Singapore Exhibition & Convention Bureau, APM returns as the first major in-person maritime tradeshow after a two-year hiatus.

Dr Osman will be leading the discussion on decarbonisation and examining innovations and incentives that could help accelerate decarbonisation in the maritime sector.

Here, Dr Osman discusses smarter shipping operations through big data and digital connectivity.

The transition towards digitalization and automation is speeding up in the maritime industry. During the pandemic, digitalization was turbo-charged by at least half-a-decade. Driven by the need to decarbonize, organizations are using digital technologies and solutions to increase competitiveness and enhance operational efficiencies.

Optimizing operations through digitalization requires access to relevant and reliable data. Today, big data is used to manage data collected from sources like sensors, control systems, and other types of data acquisition or interfaces where data is made available. Big data enhances efficiency by enabling the integration of operations and assets.

Unlocking the benefits of big data within an organization requires the right infrastructure in place, with a systematic approach to cyber security management addressing both the information technology as well as industry-specific operational technology to ensure that sensitive data are safeguarded. This is extremely important as shipowners today are very concerned about cyber criminals invading their systems and crippling operations which results in huge financial losses.

Besides gathering data, companies need to understand what data they need, analyze and create value from it. Developing a data strategy and data governance internally that people within the organization can take reference from is therefore crucial.

For the industry to progress together on the digitalization journey, data sharing and collaboration across the entire supply chain will be key. There is still much to be done to promote data sharing within the maritime industry alone. One of the areas to focus on will be data standardization. Standards are being used in many industries to achieve economies of scale as well as to improve quality, safety, and environmental performance.Standards are effective at facilitating integration and interoperability while promoting collaborations to derive the full value from data.

One of the ways DNV has leveraged big data to enable our customers to stay on top of the complex regulatory landscape and navigate timelines is through the Compliance Planner. Integrated into our data platform, Veracity, it is a tool that allows customers to easily track the requirements and deadlines of legislations for individual vessels as well as the entire fleet. The tool is easily accessible, automatically updated, giving the users the opportunity to plan and stay in compliance at any given time.

To meet the IMO decarbonization goals, ship owners and operators are faced with a flurry of regulations. DNV has introduced a fully digital approach to IMO DCS and EU MRV verification to help vessel operators to streamline emissions monitoring and verification. This removes the need for paper or pdf reports, and for site visits. We provide quality checks on voyage and bunker data automatically at regular intervals, ensuring consistent and better data quality. At the same time, with the digital tool, it can be used to benchmark emissions performance to make sure that they are on the right track.

Based on DNV’s experience in working with several forward leading institutions, organisations can accelerate their digitalization journey by having a clear strategy on what they want to achieve through their digital investment. At the same time, establishing the baseline on their own strengths and weakness and to identify use cases and initiatives to close the gap towards achieving their goals is critical. The development of a digital transformation roadmap and conducting pilots projects are the key success factors to achieve the desired goals and targets set by organisation.
