China elected to IMO Council Category A for the 17th consecutive time

On December 10, 2021, the 32nd Assembly of IMO held a new council election in London, UK.
 

China was once again elected as Member Council Category A, which is the 17th consecutive term since 1989, highlighting China's status and influence in the international shipping community and reflecting the recognition and expectation of the international shipping community that China should play a more active role in global shipping governance.
 

In addition to China, Japan, South Korea, Italy, Greece, Panama, the United Kingdom, Norway, the United States and Russia have also been elected to the Member Council Category A.
 

IMO Assembly elects new 40-Member Council, of which Category (a) are 10 States with the largest interest in providing international shipping services, Category (b) are 10 States with the largest interest in international seaborne trade, and Category (c) are 20 States not elected under (a) or (b) above, which have special interests in maritime transport or navigation and whose election to the Council will ensure the representation of all major geographic areas of the world.
