In October this year, South Korean shipping companies received a total of
26 new ship orders of 1.12 million CGT, which accounted for
52% of the global new ship market, surpassing Chinese shipping companies to
rank first in the world.
According to the report, in October, the global new shipbuilding market received a total of 71 new ships with 2.13 million CGT. Among them, Chinese shipping companies received
35 new ship orders with 810,000 CGT, accounting for
about 38%, ranking second in the world.
From January to October this year, global new shipbuilding orders totaled 40.99 million CGT, up more than 2.5 times from 15.63 million CGT in the same period last year, and the highest level since 46.98 million CGT in the same period in 2013.
Among them, Chinese shipping enterprises received orders of 19.93 million CGT, accounting for about 48.6%, ranking first. South Korean companies ranked second with orders of 15.79 million CGT, accounting for 38.5% of the total, followed by Japanese companies with 3.71 million CGT.
New orders for container ships and bulk carriers surged in the first 10 months of the year. Orders for new container ships of 12,000 TEU class and above were 11.09 million CGT,
a year-on-year increase of 804%; New bulk carrier orders were 2.34 million CGT,
up 213% year on year; Orders for new ships for large LNG carriers were 4.76 million CGT,
up 99% year on year.
At the end of October, global hand-held orders stood at 89.03 million CGT, an increase of 280,000 CGT from the end of September. Among them, The hand-held orders of Chinese and Japanese shipping companies were 36.33 million CGT and 9.44 million CGT respectively. South Korean shippers placed 28.82 million CGT orders,
the largest number since March 2016.
The Global new shipbuilding index continued its upward trend, rising three points to 152.8 in October, up 20% from 127.11 in January and above 150 for the first time since September 2009, according to Clarkson. In terms of ship prices, LNG carriers, 22,000TEU to 24,000TEU container ships, VLCC, Suezmax tankers and other new ships continued to increase in price.
