On November 4, the North Bund International Shipping Forum 2021, hosted by Shanghai Municipal People's Government and Ministry of Transport, and organized by Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission, Shanghai Hongkou District, China COSCO Shipping Corporation Limited, and Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd., was held at W Shanghai – the Bund. In strict accordance with the COVID prevention and control requirements, the forum was held both online and offline. A total of 150 representatives from the international shipping industry and industry chain stakeholders attended the offline event.
As one of the parallel sessions of the 1st North Bund Forum, this event was held under the theme of “Revolution and Response: Shipping Industry Under Global Economic and Trade Changes”. Also as an international high-end event specialized in shipping, the forum focuses on the opportunities and challenges brought by global economic and trade changes to the shipping industry, gains insights into the new trends of the global shipping industry, and provides a communication and cooperation platform for all related parties in the shipping industry chain to understand the latest situation and future development of the international shipping industry in order to build a harmonious and sustainable industry ecosystem, and to inject new impetus into the world economy.
Vice Mayor of Shanghai Mr. Zhang Wei, Chief Engineer of the Ministry of Transport and Head of Water Transport Department Mr. Li Tianbi, Chairman and Party Secretary of COSCO SHIPPING Mr. Wan Min, and Chairman and Party Secretary of Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd. Mr. Gu Jinshan addressed the meeting.

Mr. Zhang Wei pointed out in his speech that the maritime shipping industry, as an important and basic strategic service industry, meets more than 95% of the transportation needs in world trade. Since 2020, the vulnerability of the international logistics chain and supply chain has been increased under the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, even with difficulties in daily operation. As a result, the importance of deepened cooperation among different countries has made it more imperative to build Shanghai into an international shipping center. Zhang said that Shanghai will continue to forge ahead on the path of reaching this goal.

Chairman of COSCO SHIPPING Mr. Wan Min indicated in his speech that in response to the global economic and trade changes, shipping needs to identify the long-term trends from short-term uncertainties. Such long-term trends of the shipping market will depend on the changes of three relationships. First, the change of trade pattern with its focus on the change in globalization and regionalization; second, the digital transformation with its focus on the change of internal and external drive; and third, environmental protection with its focus on the change of partial improvement and deep innovation. To this end, he advocated close cooperation across the shipping industry chain to effectively respond to these changes, further enhance the industry's ability to support global trade, achieve new progress and make new contributions in the new business cycle, and play a unique role for the stable operation of the global supply chain.
Director of the Board and President of COSCO SHIPPING Mr. Fu Gangfeng, Secretary General of International Chamber of Shipping Mr. Guy Platten, Chairman of COFCO Corporation Mr. Lyu Jun, Deputy Dean and Professor of National School of Development of Peking University and Director of Institute of Digital Finance, Peking University Mr. Huang Yiping, Director and President of Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd. Mr. Yan Jun, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd Mr. Rolf Habben Jansen, and Director of Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission Mr. Yu Fulin delivered speeches on topics including “Shipping Industrial Chain Deep Integration”, “Work Together for a Stable, Smooth and Efficient International Supply Chain”, “Shipping's Decarbonization Journey”, “Explore the Direction of Digital Development of Smart Ports”, and “China as a Key Market for Hapag-Lloyd in a Challenging Industry Environment“.

Director of the Board and President of COSCO SHIPPING Mr. Fu Gangfeng said that to build a more reliable, stable and secure global supply chain, the shipping industry should seek a breakthrough in both its mindset and action, and promote the deep integration of the industry chain. First, it should respond to customer demand and stabilize the global supply chain; second, it should follow the trend of the times to digitally empower the integration of the entire shipping process; and third, it is necessary to work together with other stakeholders to achieve green development and emission reduction. The shipping industry needs to build a “community” mindset. In other words, the shipping industry and global trade is a community of shared future, all shipping enterprises form a community of shared future, and the shipping industry and upstream and downstream industry chain also constitute a community of shared future.
Major guests from cargo owners, shippers, finance, trade and government authorities, including Vice Chairman of Hisense Group Holdings Co., Ltd. Dr. Lin Lan, Chief Business Officer of Bank of Communications Mr. Tu Hong, CEO of CMA CGM China Mr. Ludovic Renou, Managing Director of Maersk China Limited Mr. Jens Eskelund, Vice President of Cargill China Mr. Owen Ma, and Member of the Leading Party Group of Shanghai Hongkou District Mr. Chen Shuai, had a panel discussion centering on the theme of “Response to the Global Economic and Trade Changes”. They also had an in-depth discussion on a variety of tricky industry issues such as supply chain congestion.
The three major reports released by the forum became a highlight of the event. In the presence of all guests, Director of the Board and President of COSCO SHIPPING Mr. Fu Gangfeng, Director of Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission Mr. Yu Fulin, Director of Shanghai Hongkou District Mr. Hu Guangjie, Director and President of Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd.
