After container ships, vehicle carriers are becoming another ship type with "explosive growth" this year.
The number of orders for new ships in the first eight months exceeded the total of the past six years. The prices of newbuildings and second-hand ships have risen sharply, and the daily chartering price has created a 13-year high.
In the first eight months, new orders reached US $4.4 billion, and Chinese shipbuilding enterprises became the biggest winner.
VesselsValue stated in its recent report that the number of orders for new vehicle carriers has reached US$3.2 billion this year, and a total of 56 ships, including alternative orders, totaled US$4.4 billion.
Ship brokerage company Affinity (Shipping) also said that in the past few weeks, the number of new orders for vehicle carriers has reached 20-30.
In the first eight months of this year, the number of orders for vehicle carriers has exceeded the sum of the past six years, compared with an average of only 5 orders per year between 2016 and 2020.
It is worth mentioning that all new ships ordered this year will be operated with LNG dual fuel.
According to Clarkson's statistics, in the first eight months of this year, there were a total of 22 new orders for vehicle carriers, which accounted for two-thirds of the current total of 31 orders.
Chinese shipping companies dominate the field of this ship type, with 18 of the total 22 orders received by Chinese shipping companies, and 4 by Japanese shipping companies.
Torbjorn Wist predicts that the tight capacity of the vehicle carrier market will continue. VesselsValue also predicts that the current market conditions may extend to 2024 because the market lacks new capacity.
