ReCAAP ISC Capacity Building Virtual Lecture 2021


Officers from ReCAAP Contracting Parties participated in a virtual lecture to deepen their understanding on legal aspects of piracy and armed robbery against ships.
 
60 officers from 19 ReCAAP Member States participated virtually in the first Capacity Building Virtual Lecture for 2021, organised by ReCAAP ISC, on 7 - 8 July 2021.

The main aim of this lecture was to deepen the understanding on legal aspects of piracy and armed robbery against ships so as to assist Focal Points/Contact Point (FP/CP) to fulfill their responsibilities. FPs/CP are the government agencies designated by ReCAAP Member States to be the primary points-of-contact for the ReCAAP information sharing network.
 
The lecture covered the following two themes.
 
      - Piracy and Armed Robbery against ships in Asia from the perspective of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)
 
      - Other international conventions that may be applicable in some cases concerning the security of commercial shipping
 
The guest lecturer was Professor Robert Charles Beckman, Emeritus Professor at the Faculty of Law of the National University of Singapore (NUS).   Professor Beckman is specialized in Ocean Law and Policy as well as in the International Regulation of Shipping.
 
The ReCAAP member countries represented at the virtual lecture were Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Denmark, India, Japan, Korea, Laos, Myanmar, the Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, United Kingdom, and United States of America
