Wan Hai orders 6 new Panamax container ships

Following the order for 12 feeder container ships at the beginning of the year, Wan Hai Lines will order 6 new Panamax container ships, taking its new shipbuilding spending to more than $1.1bn this year.

Wan Hai is negotiating with South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries to build 5 to 6 13000TEU container ships, and the construction contract is expected to be signed in April.

The cost of this batch of new ships may reach nearly 110 million U.S. dollars per ship, because the price of new ships has risen significant this year.

If Wan Hai’s order is formally finalized, the company’s new shipbuilding investment this year will exceed 1 billion U.S. dollars.

The reason why Wan Hai actively expands its fleet is because it feels that it is more valuable to invest in its own ships than chartering ships.

Alphaliner data shows that Wan Hai currently has 123 ships, 69 of which are self-owned ships.
