Senior Officers of ReCAAP Contracting Parties Gather to Deepen Understanding and Enhance Cooperation to Combat Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia

Capacity Building Senior Officers' Meeting takes place on the back of 32% increase in actual incidents in Asia in 2020

Senior officers from ReCAAP Contracting Parties as well as Indonesia gathered virtually to gain an in-depth understanding of the piracy and armed robbery against ships situation in Asia.

The Capacity Building Senior Officers’ Meeting (CBSOM) saw participants from Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, United Kingdom and the ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre (ISC) present updates on areas of concern to the shipping industry, and share best practices on combating piracy and armed robbery against ships.

“This meeting of the senior officers of regional maritime authorities is both vital and timely. The actual number of incidents in Asia increased by 32% in 2020 compared to the year before, which is of concern,” said Mr. Masafumi Kuroki, Executive Director of ReCAAP ISC.

“CBSOM provides a timely opportunity for the maritime regulatory and law enforcement authorities across Asia, Australia, Europe and the United States to come together to gain a shared understanding of the situation, share best practices, and strengthen cooperation in the fight against maritime crimes,” concluded Mr. Masafumi Kuroki.

The ReCAAP member countries represented at CBSOM included Australia, Bangladesh, China, Denmark, India, Japan, Korea, Laos, Myanmar, the Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, United Kingdom, and the United States of America. Also attending was Indonesia.
