Persian Gulf – Industry Guidance following Security Incident

Members who transit the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Gulf of Aden and Red Sea should note that earlier this month, a tanker conducting STS operations in the Persian Gulf reported a limpet mine attached to the hull of the vessel, which was removed with no injuries or damage sustained. There is no indication as to where or when the device was attached to the hull.

In response to the potential risks posed to vessels operating in these areas, Industry organisations - BIMCO, ICS, Intertanko, Intercargo, and OCIMF - have issued guidance to vessels setting out various risk mitigation measures. The Guidance includes reviewing BMP5, carrying out visual checks of the hull and measures to be taken at anchor if alerted to suspicious activity.

Members transiting the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Gulf of Aden and Red Sea should take note of the Guidance, which is available here.
