French energy giant Total is continuing to expand its fleet of LNG tankers. Following the two LNG-powered VLCCs in the first half of this year, Total will charter four new LNG-powered Aframax tankers, which may be built by Guangzhou Shipyard International with an order value of about $240 million (1.6 billion yuan).
In addition to Guangzhou Shipyard International, the shipyards bidding for the order include Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, New Times Shipbuilding, Hyundai Heavy Industries, Samsung Heavy Industries.
South Korean companies have submitted bids of more than $65m per LNG-powered LR2 tanker, while China is offering around $60m per vessel.
If Guangzhou Shipyard International's order is confirmed, this will be the second LNG-powered Aframax tanker contract that Guangzhou Shipyard International has received this year.
In April this year, Guangzhou Shipyard International shared with Waigaoqiao for an order of 12 LNG-powered Aframax tankers from Shell.
These new ships were ordered by Bank of Communications Leasing and are the largest ship chartering project ever undertaken by Shell and Chinese financial institutions.
The cost of the 12 LNG-powered ships is US$54 million per ship, and the total value is nearly US$650 million (approximately RMB 4.6 billion).
According to Clarkson's latest data, GSI currently has a total of 43 orders of 2,914,200 DWT ships, including product tankers, chemical tankers, , ro-ro ships, bulk carriers and oil tankers, and the delivery arrangement has been extended until 2023.
