Giannetta steps up to chair HKLSA

The long-standing executive director of the Hong Kong Liner Shipping Association, Roberto Giannetta became chairman of the Association effective 15 January, HKLSA announced today.

Mr Giannetta replaces the outgoing chairman, Tony Tong of OOCL. Mr. Giannetta is no stranger to the Association and to Hong Kong, as he has been the executive director of the HKLSA since 1994.

However, for a non-shipping executive to take the top post at the Association might be considered unorthodox. An Association spokesperson explained it this way.

“This is the first time that the Association has appointed a non-shipping line executive to chair the Association.  Given the dynamics of the industry at the moment, the level of attention the Association wishes to give to industry matters at present, and the amount of time and commitment that is being demanded by this position, it was felt that the Association would be better served with a dedicated chairman who can give the Association the time, energy, and attention that it deserves.

“While there might be a draw-back with a dedicated non-shipping executive in the chairman seat (i.e. this person could miss some of the underlying currents that a shipping company executive might be able to pick up on), the Association has intentionally addressed this potential draw-back by restructuring the Officers of the Association to include a Steering Committee comprised of senior executives from a cross-section of Association members.  This Steering Committee will work closely with the chairman on day-to-day matters and share responsibilities and opportunities within the Association’s framework.”

Upon his appointment Mr. Giannetta commented, “I have had the privilege of working with a number of experienced and dedicated shipping executives over the years. The last few years, working closely with Tony and Daniel Lai (ongoing vice-chairman of HKLSA) has been a wonderful experience for me. While it will be difficult for me to fully fit Tony’s shoes as he is leaving the Association, I know that there are many other committed and effective industry leaders in our ranks that can lend me the support that I will need going forward.”

Mr. Giannetta intends to continue to focus HKLSA attention on key maritime and industry matters affecting Hong Kong. These include  operational efficiencies within and around Hong Kong Port, fostering strong ties with Hong Kong and neighbouring Government officials, cooperating with other industry stakeholders in promoting Hong Kong as Asia’s premier maritime centre and Hong Kong Port as a leader in Smart-Port logistics, and helping formulate the future benefits to be derived from Hong Kong’s integration into the Greater Bay Area structure. HKLSA will continue to work with the Hong Kong Maritime & Port Board, the Hong Kong Logistics Council, the HK General Chamber of Commerce, and numerous other industry focused bodies impacting Hong Kong’s economic and logistics wellbeing.

The HKLSA will have the benefit of overlapping continuity in the presence of Mr. Daniel Lai (of CMA CGM HK), who will continue in his well-established role of Vice-Chairman for the Association, together with Ms. Serena Yiu as Secretary General for the Association.

Following the appointment of Mr. Giannetta, the Hong Kong Liner Shipping Association has tweaked its structural make-up by creating a newly established Steering Committee, who will work with the HKLSA Officers on policy, direction, strategy, and follow-up action points. This Steering Committee will be represented initially by Mr. Daniel Lai (of CMA CGM), Mr. Michael Britton (of HSDG), Mr. Kevin Li (of ZIM), and Mr. Randy Chen (of WHL).

Speaking on the influence of HKLSA, Mr. Lai says, “The Association carries a significant profile in Hong Kong, and beyond. With membership coming from the major shipping lines offering service to/from Asia, the Association has the responsibility to represent the interests of the container liner industry in the region. We have been very fortunate to see HKLSA advance in this domain under the valuable leadership of Tony Tong. We, equally, remain confident that this same influence and leadership will be forthcoming from the HKLSA in the years to come.”

The HKLSA was founded in 1982 and is comprised of liner shipping companies’ offices based in Hong Kong. Together they represent more than 96% of the total volume of containerised cargo moving to/from HK with close to 400 port calls per week. The Associations’ primary functions include promoting the efficiency and safety of port operations in Hong Kong, and representing the interests of the shipping lines on issues affecting governance and industry policies.
