Shanghai sees more export of oil rigs amid recovering demand

Another pair of oil drilling platforms got exported on Friday at a port of east China's Shanghai Municipality, amid the recovering demand for drilling equipment.

The pair departing on Friday are designed with a maximum drilling depth of around nine km each, and are already the third and fourth drilling platforms that Shanghai immigration officials have seen exported so far this year.

Officers with the Yangshan Immigration Inspection went to the port to carry out inspection and issue exit permits to the crew of the ship for transporting the oil drilling platforms abroad.

"Usually the shipping agent takes the passport, or seaman's book, to our office to do the departure inspection. Now we come here, we can save them a lot of time, in order to increase the international competitiveness for the marine products made in Shanghai," said Fan Yong, an officer with Yangshan Immigration Inspection.

Valued at a combined 432 million U.S. dollars, the two rigs delivered last week belong to China's Shandong Offshore Equipment company, and will both be serving clients in the Middle East.

"Either of the two rigs is covered by a four-year firm contract plus another extra two-year options. The contracts are pretty good under the current market condition," said Sun Yuanhui, CEO of Shandong Offshore Equipment Co., Ltd.

"The oil platforms we have built are able to cope with rough sea conditions in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and the North Sea. The North Sea typically has high waves in the winter, but our drilling units can still work effectively in that environment," said Zhang Wei, deputy manager of Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd, manufacturer of the two rigs.
