Taicang, Shimonoseki discuss broader cooperation

A delegation from Shimonoseki, Japan visited Taicang, Jiangsu province on Nov 26 in an effort to expand the two cities' port-to-port cooperation into more fields.

Shintaro Maeda, mayor of Shimonoseki, reflected on his previous visit to Taicang two years ago and spoke highly of the city's development potential, as he noticed that many new skyscrapers had been built.

Shintaro said that Shimonoseki is a port city with a variety of tourism attractions, including its rich history and tasty cuisine.

He said that the two cities share many similarities and that his delegates were selected from a variety of different government bureaus, enterprises, and associations in order to pursue broader cooperation with Taicang.

A sea route between Taicang and Shimonoseki launched in September 2006 has greatly increased Sino-Japanese trade over the past 14 years, and companies such as Panasonic, Sharp, Canon, and dozens more have begun shipping cargo to Taicang Port.

In addition to cities in Jiangsu province, the sea route also serves Hangzhou, Shanghai, and a number of cities along the upper-middle reaches of the Yangtze River.

Japan is Taicang's third largest business partner, and more than 170 Japanese enterprises operate in the city, forming several industrial clusters and attracting manufacturers such as Honda Motor, Toyota Tsusho, Komatsu, Sojitz Group, and Nippon Steel.
