The fourth Hong Kong Maritime Week 2019, as at its predecessors, is an inclusive gathering that reaches out to maritime professionals globally. Unlike some other similar events held around the world it also seeks to engage the local community, particularly the young.
When the horn blasts for the start of the Hong Kong Maritime Week Orienteering Race 2019 (17 November) on the first of seven days of marine related activities, many of Hong Kong’s youth will be embarking on a marathon of educational and fun activities.
Led by HKMW co-organiser, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum, our youngest members of the community and their parents can become immersed in the unfamiliar world of the sea in the school workshops and the family fun day at the Museum (17 November). Situated at Pier 8, visitors to the Museum will also get a chance to board one of Hong Kong’s newest and most technically advanced tugboats operated by Hong Kong Salvage & Towage (Pier 9, 17-22 November).
The more adventurous can actually set sail on the tug into Hong Kong waters as friendly crew members relate the many adventures they have had when assuring the safety of ocean traffic within the harbour and beyond (18-19 November).
Back at the Museum, special programmes have also been arranged for secondary school students from 18-22 November, where, among a range of activities, students will get the chance to steer a virtual vessel during a series of bridge simulator sessions. On hand to offer guidance about an exciting life at sea will be a team of professionals from Orient Overseas Container Line and One Network Express, two of the best-known liner firms in the business.
The Maritime Services Training Institute is the beating heart of Hong Kong’s maritime training initiatives. It will be opening its doors to a world of opportunity for secondary school students from 18-22 November.
Apart from 15 degree, full-time and special programmes from maritime studies, mechanical engineering, maritime cadet programmes and meteorology, there are courses aimed at the booming cruise industry. The MSTI uses some of the most up to date training equipment and software, which is bound to fascinate our tech-savvy teens.
Anybody with an interest in the cruise industry – for work or play – will relish the opportunity to board a cruise vessel at the extraordinary Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, courtesy of the Hong Kong Seaman’s Union. The visit will take place on 19 November from 2:30pm – 4:30pm.
