China increases oil, gas production to alleviate dependence on foreign supply

China has taken steps to increase oil and gas production to keep dependence on foreign energy supply at a rational level, said Zhang Jianhua, head of the National Energy Administration, on Friday.

For energy security, China has strengthened support for exploitation and development in order to increase domestic crude oil production, Zhang told a press conference in Beijing, noting that dependence on foreign energy supply has gone up in recent years as domestic crude oil production could not match increasing demand.

"In 2015, our maximum crude oil output reached 215 million tons, and in 2018, it reached 190 million tons. This year, it has gradually picked up. So it is totally guaranteed that we can go back to an output of 200 million tons in 2022," Zhang said.

Meanwhile, efforts have also been made to ensure natural gas supply, according to the administration.

The domestic natural gas output was 160 billion cubic meters in 2018, and it has reached 170 billion cubic meters so far this year. It is expected that the domestic natural gas output will increase by over 10 billion cubic meters in the next two years.
