In new guidance on the implementation of the 2020 sulphur cap, 8 associations, including the International Bunkering Industry Association and the International Association of Classification Societies, address issues related to fuel compatibility, fuel handling and storage. The guidance does not touch on compliance through scrubbers or LNG. Among the key messages of the guidance are:
• Ensure fuel quality by ensuring that blend components are suitable for bunker fuel production, with particular attention being given to ensure the final product is stable
• Ship operators and fuel suppliers should allow sufficient time to test for compatibility between existing and proposed bunker fuel delivery, especially if no “empty” dedicated storage tank is available on the ship.
