One of the world’s largest containerships by carrying capacity at 21,413 teu, the OOCL Hong Kong, will be making her maiden call to the Port of Hong Kong on July 25th this Thursday. She will be breaking the record for being the largest containership to berth at the Hong Kong container terminal in Kwai Chung.
This homecoming for what was the largest containership in the world on the day it was named at a christening ceremony in May 2017, comes two years after it went into service on an Asia-Europe service that bypassed its namesake.
The OOCL Hong Kong, which is close to 400m in length and nearly 60m wide, is owned and operated by Orient Overseas Container Line and she is the first of the six G-class mega containerships in our fleet. It was the first containership to have broken through the 21,000 teu mark as the largest containership in the world by carrying capacity when the vessel was delivered on May 12th, 2017, an important breakthrough and milestone for OOCL and in the history of container shipping.
“This sea giant is not only flagged in Hong Kong but is also named after Hong Kong, an international port gateway to world trade and a place where OOCL has been deeply rooted since our establishment in 1969. Two years after her first sailing, the OOCL Hong Kong is now going to make regular calls to Hong Kong in our Asia-Europe service. Her next stop will be Shanghai after the first berthing in Hong Kong, the company said in a release issued today (23 July).
