MPA sees increased demand for computing,data analysis skill

47 students received the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore’s (MPA) Global Internship Award (GIA) on 17 May 2019. This is the sixth year of the MPA GIA which sees students from multi-disciplines, ranging from IT and computer science to data analytics being awarded by host companies.

 

The MPA GIA also sees eight companies coming onboard for the first time. These include maritime technology enterprise, Alpha Ori, along with port operator Jurong Port and classification societies, DNV GL and Lloyd’s Register. A total of 33 host companies will participate in this year’s programme. These companies exemplify the diversity of careers and opportunities available in Maritime Singapore. 

 

The MPA GIA offers students the opportunity to gain both on-the-job experience and global exposure. 

 

Ms Quah Ley Hoon, Chief Executive of MPA, said, “With more than 5000 maritime establishments in Singapore, a career in this industry offers an opportunity to be working in the heart of the world. This is also an exciting time for Maritime Singapore as we embrace the latest technologies to position Singapore as a leading global maritime hub. The demand for data analytics, IT and computer science students will grow. MPA will continue to work closely with industry stakeholders and institutes of higher learning, to sustain the pipeline of skilled talents for Maritime Singapore.”

 

Since its inception in 2013, the MPA GIA has received strong support from a variety of host companies, including shipping, port and maritime services companies. MOL Chemical Tankers Pte Ltd, found the MPA GIA beneficial to its talent recruitment needs. “We look forward to supporting the programme in the coming years as we see this as a way to contribute to the maritime industry. Over the years, it has become a great platform to test drive future talents for our company and we are glad to have hired some of the MPA GIA graduates who had proved to be driven, inquisitive and highly adaptable in both local and global work contexts. More importantly, our workplace has benefitted from engaging these young minds who bring in fresh ideas and perspectives,” said Mr Jeffrey Lee, Deputy General Manager, Human Resources/General Administration Department, MOL Chemical Tankers Pte Ltd.

  

Mr Leonard Wong, an Information Systems undergraduate at the Singapore Management University who has been awarded the MPA GIA, said, “I have always been intrigued by the maritime sector and the people working behind the scenes to manage highly interlinked global supply chains and facilitate transnational movement of goods. Moreover, the industry is undergoing digital transformation and I want to be part of this exciting revolution, leveraging technology to make sea-bound trade more productive and cost efficient and for countries to prosper along the way. I am definitely looking forward to my attachment with Alpha Ori Technologies where I will have the opportunity to further hone my skills while gaining a deeper understanding of the maritime industry and the challenges it faces.”

 

To date, over 200 students have benefited from the 12-week programme that comprises a local as well as an overseas internship attachment of up to six weeks.
