CMA CGM recognised at SG International Maritime Awards 2019

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) honoured 12 industry partners for their outstanding contributions to Maritime Singapore’s twin engines of growth – its hub port and international maritime centre – at this evening’s Singapore International Maritime Awards (IMA) 2019.

Held in conjunction with the 14th Singapore Maritime Week (SMW), the event was graced by Dr Lam Pin Min, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Health.

Ms Quah Ley Hoon, Chief Executive of MPA, said, “Over the past 700 years, Singapore has developed rapidly from a trading port to a hub port and an international maritime centre today. As we mark our bicentennial this year, it is an opportune time for Singapore and Singaporeans to reflect on how Maritime Singapore has progressed to achieve today’s success. Tripartite efforts have been instrumental in securing our global leadership position and will continue to be essential as we work towards becoming a Global Maritime Hub for Connectivity, Innovation and Talent.”

Top honours for CMA CGM Group and maritime lawyer Mrs Gina Lee-Wan

The prestigious biennial awards received more than 200 nominations for its 2019 edition. Reflecting the wide-ranging services in Maritime Singapore, this year’s recipients ranged from shipowners to maritime service providers, outstanding offshore and marine engineering companies to R&D and technology firms.

Amongst the winners, leading global container shipping company, CMA CGM Group and Mrs Gina Lee-Wan, Partner and Co-Head of Maritime and Aviation Practice at Allen & Gledhill, received the International Maritime Centre (Corporate) Award and the International Maritime Centre (Individual) Award respectively.

A world leader in maritime transportation, CMA CGM has been steadily expanding its presence in Singapore. In 2017, CMA CGM doubled its operating capacity in Singapore to four million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). CMA CGM works with MPA, and institutions of higher learning to develop a skilled maritime workforce. In 2018, CMA CGM partnered MPA to train students under the Global Internship Award programme as well as develop its employees under the Maritime Cluster Fund through in-house training and overseas attachments.

Mrs Lee-Wan, winner of the International Maritime Centre (Individual) Award, is consistently ranked in the top tier of leading individuals, and in 2018, she was recognised as one of the top 10 maritime lawyers globally by Lloyd’s List. In 2019, she was among the inaugural batch of select practitioners to be recognised as a Senior Accredited Specialist in Maritime and Shipping Law by the Singapore Academy of Law.

New Manpower Programmes to Strengthen Maritime Talent Pipelines

At the event, Dr Lam shared about the Work-Learn Technical Diploma in Port Automation Technology, which was jointly launched by PSA and the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) this month. This diploma programme will equip ITE graduates with the right skills as we prepare for the complex and automated operations at the Tuas next-generation container port. The Nanyang Technological University and the Singapore Management University have also been regularly reviewing their respective maritime curricula to upkeep their relevance, including increasing the focus on digital and soft skills.

Dr Lam announced a second initiative, the Professional Conversion Programme (PCP) for Sea Transport Professionals, a programme which MPA is collaborating with Singapore Polytechnic (SP), SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) and Workforce Singapore (WSG) to help mid-career professionals re-skill and take up jobs in the maritime sector. MPA will announce more details of the PCP later this year.

“Singapore remains strongly committed to growing our maritime sector. We will continue to forge strong partnerships across the Government, industry, unions and the academia to cement our status as one of the most comprehensive and vibrant maritime hubs in the world,” said Dr Lam.
