Chinese research vessel "Kexue" first open to public

Chinese research vessel "Kexue(science)" was open to the public for the first time on Friday in Qingdao City, eastern China's Shandong Province.

Many primary school students came to visit the advanced vessel which just concluded a 74-day-long scientific exploration in the Western Pacific Ocean.

"The Kexue vessel is huge, it weighs as many as 4,711 tons and it can do a broad range of research. It amazes me, especially its labs which have a lot of experiment machines, marine life and all kinds of ship models," said Ma Fusheng, a primary school student.

Researchers introduced equipment and scientific results to students. The little visitors were excited to walk on the deck, visit the vessel bridge and watch the latest deep-sea footage.

"We hope to bring the people closer to marine research, make them understand the research vessel, equipment, deep-sea samples and how scientists conduct deep-sea research," said Diao Xinyuan, assistant to the director of the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Kexue is one of the most advanced research vessels in China, dubbed "mobile ocean lab". Since its first voyage in 2014, the vessel has completed more than 30 important expeditions.
