A private ship-repairs firm has become a model in the development of the private sector in China.
In the Xinya Shipyard, large ocean vessels are seen everywhere along the 1,500 meters of coastline in Zhoushan City of east China's Zhejiang Province.
Founded in 2002, the Xinya Ship Repairs Firm owns two dry docks, one of which has a deadweight tonnage of 200,000. It also has four repair wharves.
The shipyard can fix and convert more than 160 ocean vessels annually.
"Zhejiang Province is known for its ship repair quality in China and Zhoushan is known for that within Zhejiang. In Zhoushan, the Xinya Shipyard is the leader in ship repairs. Xinya is currently the largest private ship repair service in China," said Xia Songkang, chief executive officer of the shipyard.
The company's clients come from all over the world, especially countries like Singapore, Japan, South Korea and Germany.
"I trust the Xinya Shipyard, because we have been working with them. So if I bring anything new, they'll be able to understand what exactly my requirement is," said Ajay Sharma, a technical superintendent of the Executive Ship Management company of Singapore.
"There are many shipyards in China. During our negotiations, we felt Xinya was the best," said Yong Byung-gil, senior manager of the engineering execution Department of Hyundai.
More than 1,000 employees work for the shipyard and almost all of them are local.
Private companies like Xinya are the backbone of China’s economy. What we’ve seen from Xinya is the grit and a mindset to constantly learn and improve, which best describes this company’s competitive advantage.
The growth of a company depends on not only its own efforts but also government support.
The Belt and Road Initiative put forward by President Xi Jinping in 2013 has brought tremendous opportunities to Chinese companies like Xinya.
Striving to develop the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, it allows Chinese companies to have much easier access to customers from all over the world.
"After President Xi proposed the Belt and Road Initiative, we have had the five-year development program for Xinya. The Xinya platform has enabled us to get a niche on the international market thanks to our culture and management system," said Xia.
