China's manned submersible completes year's first task

China's manned submersible "Shenhai Yongshi" (Deep-Sea Warrior) finished its first diving this year on Tuesday in southwest Indian Ocean with a harvest of deep-sea samples.

The submersible was placed into the sea at 07:30, and dived for over nine hours to a depth of 3,300 meters before returning with a rich harvest of deep-sea stones and creatures.

The deep-sea stones collected weigh 170 kilograms, the heaviest collection by the submersible since it was put into operation.

Scientists were excited to see the rich samples brought back by the submersible and cherished them as if they were their own children.

"We are afraid of contamination. It will cause great trouble if such precious samples were contaminated," said Pan Yiwen, an associate professor of the Ocean College at Zhejiang University.

The Deep-Sea Warrior is 95 percent China-developed, with key devices, including the manned cabin, underwater acoustic communication system and acoustic Doppler velocity log, showing advanced performance and steady technical condition.
