'Starfish’submersible completes underwater operation

China's submersible, the Haixing 6000, also known as Starfish 6000, made nine dives completing its first scientific application operation on Friday, setting a national depth record for a Chinese robotic submersible.

The Haixing 6000 was developed by the Shenyang Institute Of Automation at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and is the first remotely operated underwater vehicle built by China that's capable of diving to 6,000 meters.

During the 26-day marine scientific expedition, the underwater robot successfully made nine dives completing comprehensive scientific operations, reaching ocean depths of 1000 meters, 2000 meters, 4,000 meters and 6000 meters.

"The underwater robot not only did biological sampling and on site observations in the cold spring area, but also obtained seabed rocks with a total weight of more than 400 kilograms with the maximum single rock being 61 kilograms. The intense, continuous operation further verified the stability of its system," said Li Zhigang, the director of the underwater robot research office at the Shenyang Institute Of Automation in the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

In the 6,000-meter dive on Oct. 16, the Haixing 6000 worked along the seabed for three hours, completing various scientific tasks, such as navigation and observations, biological research and mud and water sample collection at the maximum depth of 6001 meters, reaching a national record for ocean depth by a Chinese submersible.
